Albert Babbitt is the founder and president of State Tax Services, LLC and former partner in Deloitte Tax’s Multistate Tax Services Group.  While with Deloitte, Al was the national leader of multistate tax for Deloitte’s life sciences and healthcare industry business segment and also the leader of the Atlanta sales and use tax practice.  He has over 21 years of governmental and public accounting experience.  Prior to joining Deloitte, Al was the New England Practice Leader for sales and transaction taxes with another Big Four firm, and prior to that was the Director of the Appellate Division of the Connecticut Department of Revenue Services.  In this capacity, Al was responsible for the administration of all tax appeals for the state and was a liaison between the Appellate Division and the Office of The Attorney General for litigated tax matters.

Al has been involved with a variety of multistate tax engagements for clients, including tax systems automation, audit mitigation, legislative assistance, litigation support, refund analysis, nexus reviews, voluntary disclosures and transactional consulting.  He has been a speaker before the Council on State Taxation, Institute for Professionals in Taxation, Tax Executives Institute and the Paul J. Hartman State and Local Tax Forum on sales and use tax matters.  Al is also a member of the Streamlined Sales Tax Project Business Advisory Council Board of Directors and State and Local Government Advisory Council healthcare products workgroup.

Michael Wasser is a senior manager with State Tax Services, LLC and a licensed attorney with over 13 years of experience in the area of state taxation.  Prior to joining State Tax Services, LLC, Mike served three years as policy advisor to the Commissioner of Taxes of the State of Vermont where he advised the Commissioner, the Governor of Vermont and his cabinet on tax policy matters, and served as Vermont’s delegate to the national Streamlined Sales Tax Governing Board.  Mike also acted as the Governor’s principal liaison to the State Legislature on matters involving taxes and incentives.  While in this role, he conceived of, developed, and drafted legislation for a new business tax incentive program to spur economic growth in Vermont.  He successfully advocated for the passage of the business incentive legislation that went into effect in January of 2007.

Mike came to the Vermont Dept. of Taxes after leaving his post as senior manager and sales and use tax practice leader for Deloitte Tax’s Boston Multistate Tax Practice.  In his more than 8 years with Deloitte, Mike defended corporate clients in state tax controversies and provided counsel as to a variety of planning and state tax minimization strategies.  Before joining Deloitte's Multistate Tax Practice, Mike directed the Legal Research Department for Taxware International (now ADP/Taxware).  He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Vermont in 1990, and his Juris Doctorate degree from the University of Connecticut School of Law in 1994.

Morty Steindler is a senior manager with State Tax Services, LLC and has over 12 years of state and local tax consulting experience focused in the area of sales and use taxes.  Formerly, Morty worked as a Manager with Deloitte Tax’s Multistate Tax Services Group based in Atlanta.  Morty has worked on a variety of projects, including tax systems automation, audit mitigation, refund analysis, voluntary disclosures and transactional consulting.  Prior to joining Deloitte, Morty provided multistate tax consulting for a Fortune 10 company.  Part of his responsibilities in this capacity included the coordination of activities between audit, compliance, and tax technology functions.

In addition, he performed tax process automation and effective tax rate program implementations for businesses with multistate manufacturing operations.  Morty is especially proficient in the use of CaseWare International’s IDEA® and Microsoft Access® data analysis software to analyze large volumes of client data for strategic compliance reviews.

Scott Mickelson is a senior manager with State Tax Services, LLC and has over 13 years of varying state and local tax experience.  Formerly, Scott worked as the Tax Manager at Gambro, Inc., a large manufacturer of dialysis equipment and supplies and operator of free-standing dialysis clinics.  During Scott’s nearly five-year tenure at Gambro, he was responsible for oversight of the outsourced tax compliance function, audit defense, reverse audits, and voluntary disclosures.  Prior to joining Gambro, Scott was employed in the tax departments of a venture capital company and a privately-held software company.  In each of these settings, he was again responsible for the sales and use tax function.

Scott received his Master of Taxation degree from the University of Denver and his MBA degree from the University of Colorado.  He has an active CPA license in the state of Colorado and is a member of the Colorado Society of CPAs and the AICPA.

Jason Bilz is a manager with State Tax Services, LLC and has over 9 years of experience in the sales and transaction tax area.  Formerly, Jason was a tax senior in the Multistate Tax Practice of Deloitte Tax in Atlanta, GA.  Jason has provided assistance to clients with audit defense, sales and use tax matrices, tax overpayment reviews, voluntary disclosure agreements as well as other sales and use tax and compliance concerns.  He has experience in a diverse array of industries including healthcare, manufacturing and telecommunications.

Jason is especially proficient in the use of CaseWare International’s IDEA® and Microsoft Access® data analysis software to analyze large volumes of client data for strategic compliance reviews.
